The name "Crab" for this area is attested since the Babylonian compendium MUL.APIN, but there are alternative names such as "northern and southern donkey" for the two bright stars next to the star cluster M44, Praesepe for the star cluster, "The Seat of [sky god] Anu" for the box-shaped pattern of stars around the star cluster (where "the seat" of any Babylonian god is ambiguously his throne and his temple).
