	One of the 88 official IAU constellations. The southern constellation was created by Dutch explorers in late 1597 (or early 1598) and added to ~~Western~~ star globes and charts, starting with Plancius's globe of 1598 followed by Bayer's Uranometria atlas of 1603. 			From the outset, Indus is depicted with arrows in his hand, as if he were hunting for food in the tropical rainforests of Java or Sumatra: his right hand holds several arrows next to his hip, while his left hand is raised, holding a single arrow – or is it a spear? The figure is depicted standing, dressed in a leaf skirt. In the first illustrations by Plancius and Bode, the man does not wear a headdress.

			The feather headdress, which has been depicted since the 18th century, emphasises the false association with a Native American – although such feather headdresses are also used on Indonesia's neighbouring island of Papua New Guinea. The depictions are therefore not incorrect, nor is the translation ‘Indian’ entirely wrong – but both are misleading.
