         '''II. Deity.'''
mulIM.ŠU.RIN.NA was identified with both male (dal-ma-nu) and female (dGu-la) deities (see below). Schaumberger suggests that dal-ma-nu denotes Venus’s masculine role in the morning star [3. Erg., 298] (see mulDil-bad). The mythological basis of the name "Widow's Furnace" is unclear. The identification with Gula also probably implies the identity of the constellations. In favor of this assumption is the fact that the same epithet was applied to Vega, which was part of the constellation dGu-la, in the lists of ziqpu-stars: mulGAŠAN.TIN = bēlet balāṭi "Lady of Life" [Schaumberger 1952, 226:24; 228:VII; BPO 2, 36-37, Parallels II 7].

Charcoal kilns, furnaces as invented in Mesopotamia.

mulIM.ŠU.RIN.NA (𒀯𒅎𒋗𒆸𒈾) = tinūru, 'The Furnace'. The term refers to particularly bright phenomena in the sky, perhaps to be identified with the star Vega, the brightest star in the constellation Lyra, some planets and other.

Concordance, Etymology, History[1]

Var. reading:

  • mulIM.ŠU.NIGIN2.NA
  • = mulTinūru (𒀯𒋾𒉡𒊒)
  • = 'The Furnace, 'The Oven.'

The general term only being known to refer to bright phenomena, the identification is uncertain. Among them seem to be the star Vega in Lyra, Venus, and apparently also Jupiter.

Var. designations:

  • 1) constellation,
  • 2) epithet of Venus [G. 198].

Note also the longer extended version of the star-name,

  • mulim.šu.rin.na nu.kuš2.u3.e.ne = kak-kab ti-nu-ri al-ma-na-a-ti
  • "Star of the widow's furnace" - on shape of Vega in Lyra.

Deity.

         mulIM.ŠU.RIN.NA was identified with male and female (Widows and Widowers, almānu, almattu) as well as the goddesses (dGu-la and ddil-bat = Venus). see below). (1) В ранних шумерских списках: mulim.šu.rin.na.nu.mu.un.kuš.e.ne [MSL XI, 108:409]; mulim.šu.rin.na.nu.˹mu.su.e.ne˺ [ibid. 143, Forerunner 8, col. x 23]; [muli]m.šu.rin.na.nu.kuš [ibid., 144, Forerunner 9, col. iii 3]. Cм. также [СT 26, 47 r. 9]. EAE. См. [BPO 2, II 7, III 10, VII 5; BPO 3, 52; Stev. O.T. obv. 5–8]. [Mesop.Astrol., App. B:29].

II.

[Schaumberger  1952, 226:24; 228:VII; BPO 2, 36–37, Parallels II 7].

III.

[ibid., VII 5].

(3) Венера «поворачивает» к Печи; DIŠ mulDil-bat SUR-ma ana IGI ˹mul˺[IM.ŠU.RIN].NA KI.MIN ˹mulMAR.GID2.DA˺ NIGIN…
