Prima Hyadum is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Latin. It is the name of HIP 20205 (γ Tau, HR 1346) in constellation Tau.

Etymology and History

The Latin term occurs first in Flamsteed (1729) but is based on the Arabic idea to enumerate the stars in the Hyades cluster; in Arabic it was Awwal ad-Dabarān, The First of Dabarān (the group from which the star name "Aldebaran" derives).
