Constellation and zodiac sign of the Hired Man (= Aries, Aries) in later astronomical and astrological texts. LU appears to be a homophonic replacement for the rarely used LU<sub>2</sub> (from <sup>mul lú</sup>ḪUN.GA<sub>2</sub>). It is also possible that it is a semantic replacement of the abbreviation ḪUN (see h11) by the graphically close sign LU; the symbol of the constellation in the second half of the first millennium BC was considered to be the ram, and LU could be read also as UDU = immeru "ram" [Ungnad 1941-44, 256, note 37; G. 237; AUWE, 153; Kurtik 2002, 94]. For the identification of LU<sub>2</sub> and LU in the constellation name in MLC 1866, see h12, III.  It is also possible that this is an abbreviation of LU.MAŠ, cf. [Rochberg 2004, 119, note 23].
