Many cultures have traditional sets of constellations to observe with the phases of the moon. The most famous one, the Graeco-Babylonian zodiac, is actually a division of the ecliptic. However, other Asian cultures used constellations or bright stars far away from the ecliptic that may rise or culminate together with the Moon.
We call these sets of asterisms "Lunar Systems" and count Vedic nakshatras, Chinese lunar mansions and Arabic lunar stations towards them, as well as other traditional systems like the Babylonian "path of the Moon".
