UMBIN (𒌢) = CAD K 46 for the ''kakkabu entry in Aa (check MSL XIV) and Diri and MSL 17 ????'' . | UMBIN (𒌢) = ''kakkabu''. Sumerian UMBIN (GAD.TAK<sub>4</sub>.GIŠ) is equated with Akkadian ''kakkabu'' which is the standard Akkadian term for star/asterism in a number of lexical lists. However ''kakkabu'' also has related meanings for 'star-shaped objects or formations' (CAD K 49). Given that the simple meaning of UMBIN is wheel ''(șumdu'', ''magarru''), and that UMBIN is never used in astronomical texts for stars, it seems certain that the equation UMBIN = ''kakkabu'' is in reference to the shape of a wheel and its spokes which match the shape of drawings of stars, for example the three star-shapes that form the original pictogram of the MUL-sign. | ||

UMBIN (𒌢) = kakkabu. Sumerian UMBIN (GAD.TAK4.GIŠ) is equated with Akkadian kakkabu which is the standard Akkadian term for star/asterism in a number of lexical lists. However kakkabu also has related meanings for 'star-shaped objects or formations' (CAD K 49). Given that the simple meaning of UMBIN is wheel (șumdu, magarru), and that UMBIN is never used in astronomical texts for stars, it seems certain that the equation UMBIN = kakkabu is in reference to the shape of a wheel and its spokes which match the shape of drawings of stars, for example the three star-shapes that form the original pictogram of the MUL-sign.
