mulU5.RI2.IN (𒀯𒄷𒋛𒌷𒅔) is an ancient Mesopotamian star name, most likely the root of the Greek term Orion, so likely to be identified with this constellation. See mulSIPA.ZI.AN.NA for the possible identification of the tikpu-asterism (asterism with an element consisting of small points of light close together to one another) of Urinnu as the belt of Orion.

Concordance, Etymology, History[1]

Var. designations:

  • 1) = urinnu 'a bird,' and a star name presumably in the form of the bird [CAD U/W 226, also AHw[2], 1430; Gössmann[3] 164],
  • 2) an infrequent designation of Orion (?) [Weidner 1957-59[4], 80b].
