Minchir is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Arabic. It is the name of HIP 42402 (σ Hya, HR 3418) in constellation Hya.

Etymology and History

Minchir appeared in Bode's 1801 Uranographia rooting in the Arabic term منخر الشجاع minkhar ash-shujāʽ "the nostril brave one" in Hydra.
