Saiph is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Arabic. It is the name of HIP 27366 (κ Ori, HR 2004) in constellation Ori.

Etymology and History

From an abbreviation of the sci-A asterism name saif al-jabbar, the Giant's Sword", for η, c, θ, and ι Ori. Wrongly applied as a star name to κ Ori in recent times.

Mythology

IAU Working Group on Star Names

The name was adopted by the IAU WGSN on 2016/07/20.
