Atlas is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Greek. It is the name of HIP 17847 (27 Tau, HR 1178) in constellation Tau.
Etymology and History
These names were individually applied in Renaissance times from a family of characters in Greek mythology: Atlas, Pleione and their seven daughters, the Pleiades.
