Sabik is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Arabic. It is the name of HIP 84012 (η Oph, HR 6378) in constellation Oph.
Etymology and History
Applied in recent times from its ind-A name al-sabiq, of uncertain meaning or connection. The name might mean literally "the Preceding One" or "the One Arriving First in a Race". Other sources give the name in the dualis form (for the two stars ζ and η Oph), and in the plural form (for more than two stars).
