Libertas is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Latin. It is the name of HIP 97938 (ξ Aql, HR 7595) in constellation Aql.
Etymology and History
Libertas is Latin for "liberty". Liberty refers to social and political freedoms, and a reminder that there are people deprived of liberty in the world even today. The constellation Aquila represents an eagle, a popular symbol of liberty.
Mythology
IAU Working Group on Star Names
The name was adopted by the IAU WGSN on 2015/12/15.
