Gonggong

Gonggong is a name for the 2007 OR10 dwarf planet. It has one known satellite, Xiangliu.

Gonggong was discovered on 17 July 2007 by American astronomers Megan Schwamb, Michael Brown, and David Rabinowitz.
In 2020, Gonggong was selected as a name for this body by the IAU.

Gonggong was named after a water god in Chinese mythology.

IAU Nomenclature
In 2019, the discoverers of this body hosted an online poll to choose between Gonggong (Chinese), Holle (German), and Vili (Norse). These options were chosen because associated with water (Gonggong), ice (Vili), and snow (Holle), the characteristics of this body. Later, Gonggong was announced as the winning name. It was then proposed to the IAU CSBN.
In 2020, the IAU officially accepted the name Gonggong.
