Marfik is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Arabic. It is the name of HIP 80883 (λ Oph, HR 6149) in constellation Oph.

Etymology and History

Applied since medieval times from the Arabic word al-marfiq, "the elbow", used in the Arabic Almagest in describing this star. While the medieval transliteration was marsic (with a confusion of f and the long-shaped s), Marfik is an improved spelling of recent times.
