Tepennekhet, Head of the Giant, is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Ancient Egyptian. It is the name of the star Delta Equulei in constellation Equuleus.
Concordance, Etymology, History
Nekhet is a huge constellation that is preserved in ancient Egyptian texts and visual representations.
Mythology
IAU Working Group on Star Names
The name Nekhet was suggested to the IAU WGSN in 2023. As this is a huge constellation, it cannot be justified to be represented by only a tiny star. WGSN chose to keep its heritage with a star name that is found as a body part of Nekhet in the Ramesside Star Clocks. The name was adopted on 16 July 2026.
