Most Arabic star names today root in translations of the Almagest from the original Greek language and misunderstandings in one of the steps of translation there or to Latin in mediaeval and Renaissance Europe. To separate these term from the original names used in the Arabian culture(s) prior to Greek influences, here we present two dictionaries: the Almagest-Arabic and the earlier indigenous Arabic.

Most Arabic star names today root in translations of the Almagest from the original Greek language and misunderstandings in one of the steps of translation there or to Latin in mediaeval and Renaissance Europe. To separate these term from the original names used in the Arabian culture(s) prior to Greek influences, here we present two dictionaries: the Almagest-Arabic and the earlier indigenous Arabic.

Arabic is a Semitic language, spoken by the people of Arabia (the Arab people). Historically, the Arabic translations of ancient Greek designations and descriptions of stellar positions often led to the creation of star names: sometimes, the Arabic term was transliterated to mediaeval Latin without translation, sometimes it was misunderstood or misread. This way, indigenous Arabic (pre-Islamic, from Arabian regions) names for stars and constellations were transferred into European star catalogues and celestial globes.

Transliteration Table

This encyclopaedia is written in English, but makes use of the incredibly rich work by Paul Kunitzsch (largely in German) and Roland Laffitte (in French). With fast translation from these langeuages to English, we apologise for possible transliteration errors in cases where these languages follow different conventions. Therefore, we give this table:

Solar System Names

Traditional Terms Transliteration English commentary
الشَّمْس al-Šams Sun Al-Layth said: Al-Šams, the sun is the source of brightness (Arabic ضِحّ, ḍiḥḥ). He meant that the sun is the heavenly body that travels in its orbit, and that the ḍiḥḥ is its light, which shines upon the earth.
القَمَر al-Qamar Moon derived from strong whiteness
عُطارد ʿuṭārid Mercury ʿUṭārid: from restlessness or agitation, because to the eye it seems to be dancing. It could also mean “provision”; one says: ʿaṭrid hāḏā ʿindak — “keep this as a reserve with you,” meaning “a supply.” It may have been named so because it never leaves the sun, as if it were attached to it as a provision.
الزهَرَة al-Zuharah Venus Derived from zāhir (Arabic زاهر), something that is radiant or brightly shining; it refers to both beauty and whiteness together.
المِرِّيخ al-Mirrīḫ Mars Derived from maraḫ (ARABIC: مرخ), a plant which is used to start fire.
المُشْتَرِي al-Muštarī Jupiter Derived from šariyā al-barq (Arabic شَرِيَ البَرْق), meaning the spread out of lightning in a blaze of brightness, denoting the brightness of the planet.
زُحَل Zuḥal Saturn Derived from Arabic root زَحَلَ, zaḥala, to be distant.
